Time to hit the stage! In this class, students explore what it takes to be a Broadway star. Sing your favorite songs, play exciting characters, design your own script, create fun scenes in a group setting with your friends, while learning basic choreography that Broadway stars use onstage. By the end of class, students will be ready to shine in a fabulous final performance! Whether you're a beginner or a budding star, all you need is a love for music and a willingness to have fun. A performance will take place on the last day of class on December 11. The time and location will be sent prior to the performance.
Week 1: Introduction to Musical Theater
Topic: Overview of musical theater and Broadway.
Project: Icebreaker activities and introduction to the songs and scenes that will be used in the final performance.
Week 2: Vocal Warm-Ups and Techniques
Topic: Basics of vocal warm-ups and singing techniques.
Project: Practice vocal exercises and sing a simple song as a group.
Week 3: Character Development
Topic: Understanding character development in musical theater.
Project: Choose a character from the final performance and create a character profile.
Week 4: Acting Techniques
Topic: Basic acting techniques and expressions.
Project: Perform short scenes focusing on different emotions and expressions.
Week 5: Introduction to Choreography
Topic: Basics of choreography and movement on stage.
Project: Learn and practice a simple dance routine.
Week 6: Scene Work
Topic: Working on specific scenes from the final performance.
Project: Break into groups and rehearse assigned scenes.
Week 7: Song Interpretation
Topic: Interpreting and performing songs with emotion.
Project: Choose a song from the final performance and work on delivering it with appropriate emotions.
Week 8: Ensemble Work
Topic: Importance of working as an ensemble.
Project: Group exercises to improve coordination and teamwork.
Week 9: Rehearsal Techniques
Topic: Effective rehearsal techniques and practices.
Project: Full cast rehearsal of scenes and songs.
Week 10: Costume and Props Exploration
Topic: Importance of costumes and props in a performance.
Project: Discuss and create simple costumes and props for the final performance.
Week 11: Putting It All Together
Topic: Integrating singing, acting, and dancing.
Project: Run through entire scenes with songs and choreography.
Week 12: Blocking and Staging
Topic: Understanding blocking and stage directions.
Project: Block scenes for the final performance and practice moving on stage.
Week 13: Dress Rehearsal Preparation
Topic: Importance of dress rehearsals and final preparations.
Project: Full dress rehearsal with costumes and props.
Week 14: Final Touches and Run-Through
Topic: Making final adjustments and polishing the performance.
Project: Complete run-through of the final performance with feedback and corrections.
Week 15: Final Performance
Topic: Showcasing the culmination of the semester’s work.
Project: Perform the final production, followed by a group reflection on the experience.
