Close Reading: Great First Chapters
Description
Monday, June 17 - Friday, June 21, 2024 (no class on Wednesday, June 19), 9:30 a.m. - 11:30 a.m.

Students will read and discuss a wide variety of great first chapters, from Moby-Dick and Frankenstein to The Hobbit and Harry Potter—with all sorts of novels in between! We will examine different approaches to opening a narrative and analyze the writing techniques used to engage, intrigue, and captivate readers. Students will learn about the impact of characterization, point of view, voice, setting, and many other elements of fiction as we plunge into introductions to various universes. After reading and discussing these first chapters, we hope that students will be inspired to read further into some of these novels on their own!
