Have you ever wondered how rockets worked?
Would you like to spend a week not only learning about the physics and chemistry behind rockets, but also building and launching rockets? Then this camp is for you!

We’ll be building a minimum of two to three rockets and taking them outside and launching them. We’ll be decorating them as well.

We’ll be learning about launch safety and showing you how you can sign up for youth memberships in one of the rocket associations here in the United States.

At the end of the week, you’ll be going home with your rockets; any unbuilt kits we didn’t get to, your launch platform, and any spare motors you didn’t use (parent permission required to take home the motors).

What about the weather? Rocket launches hate bad weather. If it’s too windy or raining, you can’t launch rockets. Luckily during the summer we usually get great weather for launches. But if weather prevents us from launching our rockets, we’ll set up a weekend day sometime after the camp finishes to launch rockets, but you’ll need to bring a parent or adult with you.

If weather allows we’ll also be launching a larger rocket or two, but we’ll have to go on a field trip to do that as they need more space. We’ve got an Estes Doorknob rocket that’s just waiting for a chance to go up to a thousand feet!

This camp is taught by Tom Bickford, the Director of STEM Outreach at USM and a Level 1 certified rocket enthusiast.

For the parents out there, Tom is a stickler on safety and we’ll be learning about and following all of the National Association of Rocketry’s Model Rocket Safety Code.
