ICC MAIN CENTER SUMMER CAMPS 2024-Agastya's Hands-On Design Thinking & Engineering, & Sculpture Camp
Description
Agastya USA's Design Thinking & Engineering - A Summer of Design-Led Innovation

(9:00 AM - 12:00 PM)

Embark on a journey of innovation through "Agastya USA's Hands-On Design Thinking and Engineering Camp". Students will immerse themselves in hands-on activities such as cup stacking, game design, and tackling challenges like the Tomato Marathon, all aimed at nurturing their problem-solving skills. Throughout this journey, they will learn to empathize with users, define challenges, brainstorm solutions, and prototype to test feasibility, all while embracing ambiguity and learning from failures.

Themes and Experiments

Introduction to Criteria and Constraints | Cup Stacking Challenge, Innovate a Game
Engineering Design Process & Design Thinking | Marshmallow Tower Challenge, Empathy Exercise
Ideation and Creativity | Ideation Techniques, Group Presentations
Prototyping and Testing | Detailed Sketches, Testing and Iteration
Final Testing and Reflection | Final Test, Presentations, Reflections

The week will begin with students being introduced to design criteria and constraints through engaging activities. The Cup Stacking Challenge will require teamwork and out of the box problem-solving as students work together to meet external constraints. Following this, they will participate in the 'Innovate a Game' activity, where they will unleash their creativity by designing innovative games using limited materials. The day will conclude with an Introduction to Engineering session, providing an overview of engineering principles and a technology quiz emphasizing critical thinking and problem-solving skills.
Moving on to the second day, students will dive deeper into the Engineering Design Process and Design Thinking. The Marshmallow Tower Challenge will encourage students to build freestanding structures, requiring teamwork and resilient design. An Empathy Exercise will prompt students to empathize with Nepali farmers, defining and understanding transportation challenges and exploring potential solutions. Reflections will underscore the importance of engineering and design thinking in addressing real-world challenges.
Students engage in brainstorming sessions on day three, learning ideation techniques aimed at generating ideas for their design challenges. Group Presentations will offer opportunities for students to showcase their ideas and receive feedback. Reflective discussions will center on about balancing safety and efficiency in design solutions, and fostering critical thinking.

Day four is dedicated to prototyping and testing, where students will create detailed sketches of design solutions and build prototypes. Through testing and iteration, students will evaluate prototypes, make adjustments, and discuss challenges faced. Reflections will involve an analysis of unexpected issues encountered during testing and collaboration in improving prototypes.

The final day features the culmination of the camp with final tests of prototypes and presentations showcasing completed designs. Students will showcase and reflect on completed designs, offering explanations of design choices, lessons learned, and areas for improvement. Instructors will emphasize the impact of engineering solutions on real-world problems, the value of an iterative design process and encourage students to continue applying this approach to complex problems in various contexts.
