English 12 Honors (Virtual; Howarth)
Description
Summer Courses for Credit General Information
Summer Courses for Credit are restricted to CHCA students enrolled for the following school year. Registration is on a first-come, first-served basis and opens on 01/20/26.
At registration, you will schedule a future automatic payment for the full amount. Payment is non-refundable and non-transferable after 02/23/26 at 12:00 p.m. Payments collected on 02/24/26. If a class is cancelled due to low enrollment, the scheduled payment will be cancelled before any fees are collected. If the cancellation impacts your student’s 2026-2027 course selections, you may contact us at that time for adjustments to their schedule.
Email the teacher directly if you have questions about the course content, workload, or syllabus. No classes are held on weekends.
Because summer course schedules are condensed and academic content is uncompromised, attendance is strictly enforced, and a student cannot pass a class for which he/she is not present for the stated meeting times. Please do not register for summer classes that conflict with the student’s other summer obligations.
This course is an introduction to the development of the English language through a survey of the works of key writers from the Anglo-Saxon Period through the nineteenth century, including Shakespeare, Milton, and a major British novelist. Students practice literary analysis and prepare for the challenges of college writing and discussion through close reading and critical thinking as they produce both written and oral responses to articulate their comprehension of the language, literary techniques, and themes of each work. Approaching literature from the perspective of the Christian reader, students apply knowledge of their faith and history to explore theological connections as they evaluate texts. Honors students also demonstrate mastery of the English language as they pursue increasingly sophisticated sentence structure and vocabulary study. This course is designed for students who read independently, seek the challenge of in-depth analysis of complex texts, and have demonstrated well-developed writing skills.
This course will run from June 8 through August 7. Students will complete the course independently and asynchronously throughout the summer. All quizzes, assignments, and essays must be submitted on Canvas by August 7. All course materials—including assignments, quizzes, book PDFs, and other resources—are available on the English 12 Honors Summer Course Canvas Page. I will update grades and missing assignments daily to help students stay informed about their progress. Students can access everything they need for the course on the Canvas page. To navigate the content, they should click on Modules, where each text’s unit contains links to all related PDFs, quizzes, assignments, and essays. Students will also participate in online discussions through Canvas.
Students are encouraged to reach out to me at any time to schedule an in-person or virtual meeting for additional support. Each Friday, students should email me at katie.howarth@chca-oh.org with an update on their progress in the course. These weekly check-ins help ensure that students stay on track and will be factored into their participation grade.
Self-Paced and managed through Canvas.
