Program Name
Backpacker: 7/29-8/2 at Camp Cloud Rim (Entering Grades 7-10)

Program Description
This is the perfect camp for beginning backpackers, where the first day at camp is spent reviewing outdoor skills and learning how to pack your backpack. You’ll hit the trail on Tuesday morning and return Thursday night. Backpackers will enjoy magnificent views, cook dinner, and stargaze. Be prepared for challenging hikes and rock solid friendships. Campers will earn the Cadette Primitive Camper or Senior Trail Adventure badge.
Backpacker features a hike starting at Brighton Ski Resort, over Mt. Majestic, and into Camp Cloud Rim. Campers will carry all supplies on their back (up to 1/4 of body weight) and hike 3-4 miles to different campsites each night. Camp provides sleeping bags, backpacks, and group gear. Campers will receive an additional packing list. Backpackers will be transported to program sites by camp staff.

Backpacking Specific Information - Discuss with your camper prior to registration
  • Physically Demanding: This program is physically demanding, requiring campers to carry up to ¼ of their body weight in a large backpacking pack while hiking 3-4 miles a day in mountainous terrain. Campers will not only carry their own gear (sleeping bags, sleeping pads, clothes, hygiene items, water, etc.) but will also carry group gear items (tents, stoves, food, etc.). It is a team effort.
  • Backcountry: The backpacking portion of this camp will be entirely outdoors, away from Camp Cloud Rim. Their time will be spent hiking, setting up their campsites, cooking meals with camp stoves, tearing down their campsites, and so forth. Reminder: Campers are not allowed to have cell phones at GSU summer camp.
  • Bathrooms: Campers will not have access to modern or primitive bathrooms. Campers will need to be comfortable peeing, pooping, and, if applicable, menstruating in the woods. They will dig cat holes to poop in and then bury it. All toilet paper and feminine hygiene products will be carried out with them.
  • Sleeping: Campers will be sharing tents with other campers. The tents are pop-up tents with 2-3 people in a tent. Campers will sleep on a foam sleeping pad that is half an inch thick.
  • Water: Campers will need to carry 64-96 oz of water with them in water bottles and/or hydration packs. Water will be refilled from water sources along the trail. Water will be treated prior to drinking.
