Description
Mapping takes the messy, overwhelming complexity of the world and turns it into something we can see, analyze, and understand. It transforms space into knowledge, revealing patterns that help us make better decisions about our lives, our cities, and our health. Maps help us grasp how systems work, and they tell powerful stories about the places we live.

Throughout the week, we’ll dive into publicly available datasets and use a variety of mapping tools to uncover real-world insights. We’ll identify crash-prone intersections and erosion-vulnerable zones in San Francisco. We’ll compare the BART system to major European transit networks to understand how design shapes mobility. For a dose of everyday joy, we’ll map the city’s best playground swings and its constellation of ice cream shops. We’ll also explore how the distance between fast food restaurants and schools differs in San Francisco and New York City, and what that means for kids’ health.

This will be a week of discovering the astonishing power of data for urban planning. Mapping is intuitive, endlessly fascinating, and foundational to science and civilization. You’re going to love what it unlocks.
