Who should take this course?
This course is for sailors who have completed 6th-12th grade (12-18 years old), with some sailing experience that have expressed an interest in learning more advanced sailing skills like refining upwind technique, hiking, spinnaker, and trapeze sailing. A Venture, an Optimist Race course, or a HS Sailing season are recommended before registering for these courses. But anyone with the drive to learn new skills can make it work! Students are generally most comfortable if they are over 100lbs.
What will my child learn?
AFTERNOON (INCLUDED):
Racers will train under the racing rules of sailing for practice and will learn to compete in events with other sailors of their talent level in low key local regattas & competitions. Advanced students will train in the same regattas, honing their skills with the option to travel to events across the midwest. Fees for regattas, travel, coach travel, and housing are beyond the scope of this registration - though the coaching itself is included. Students will learn to confidently sail their boats single handedly around a set course, learn right of way rules, and refine the skills needed to sail in competition formats.
MORNING (OPTIONAL EXTRA FOR FULL DAYS):
The day is long, so we don't want to get burned out. Half of each day will be focused towards playing with new equipment, racing formats, and different boats. We'll generate racing skills but push outside of "pidgeonholed" development. Options include Match racing, foiling, keelboats, catamarans, 420s, lasers. Chart your course at checkout by selecting your preferred option!
Where are the races?
Sailors are urged to participate in the Twin Cities Youth Sailing Series, held on Fridays at the various metro lakes throughout the summer. For qualified sailors, travel to out of state regattas is also available and encouraged. Tuition fees cover training at the sailing center and coaching at regattas. Fees for Twin Cities Youth Sailing registration, travel, and additional regattas are not included. Sailors are also encouraged to participate in our casual Tuesday night racing series, racing follows class Tuesday nights.
Do we need a boat?
Boats will be provided.
What do we need to bring?
Students must bring their own lunches (if full day) and snacks as well as a lifejacket, water bottle, change of clothes, water shoes, sun protection, and towel.
