Intensive Reading and Writing Support (Small Group Sessions)
Description

Intensive Reading and Writing Support (Small Group Sessions)

Overview: The Gilman Study, Parish’s home for specialized academic support services, is offering intensive, therapeutic reading and writing support using the evidence-based Sequential English Education (SEE) curriculum. This summer program is designed for students who need targeted support in reading, spelling, written expression, and related language skills. Instruction is delivered through multisensory structured language (MSL) methods that build foundational skills in a clear, systematic way.

Sessions are led by Rachael McNeely, M.Ed., Certified Academic Language Practitioner (CALP), a master’s-level educator with 12 years of experience and advanced training in reading instruction and executive functioning support. This is an excellent fit for students with dyslexia or dyslexia-like profiles, as well as students who may not have a formal identification but are showing persistent difficulty with decoding, spelling, fluency, or written expression and would benefit from structured, therapeutic instruction.

Key Features:

  • Small-group instruction (2–4 students) using the SEE curriculum
  • Explicit, multisensory practice in decoding, encoding (spelling), and written language
  • Auditory discrimination and memory skill-building
  • Progress monitoring and weekly parent communication
  • Optional take-home activities to reinforce skills

Dates/Times:

Summer Weeks 8, 9, 10, and 11, with sessions scheduled between 9:00 AM and 12:00 PM.

  • Week 8: July 13-17, 2026
  • Week 9: July 20-24, 2026
  • Week 10: July 27-31, 2026
  • Week 11: Aug 3-7, 2026
  • 1-hour sessions will be scheduled based on small-group placement once registrations are complete; final session times will be communicated prior to the program start.
  • If enrolled in this program, daycamp is available at a discounted rate should families require the extended care before and/or after each session. Daycamp is available in both half-day and full-day format (half-day is from 9AM to 12PM or 12PM-3:30PM).

Group Structure and Scheduling:

  • Students will be scheduled into small groups of 2–4 based on age and skill needs. Once registration is complete, families will be contacted to learn more about each student’s current skill profile and support needs.
  • Because sessions are small-group, instruction remains highly targeted and therapeutic, but it will not be perfectly individualized all the time, in the way a one-on-one session can be.
  • Groups are generally formed with grade level in mind when possible, while keeping the age range developmentally appropriate for instruction and group dynamics.
  • Sessions are scheduled in 1-hour increments and include 50 minutes of instruction, with a 5-minute buffer before and after each session for transitions.
  • Students arriving late will not be able to extend their session beyond the scheduled end time, as it may overlap with the next scheduled group.
  • Space is limited. We anticipate running up to three groups this summer.
  • If the session is full, families are encouraged to join the waitlist. Once enrollment is complete, an additional group may be opened if needed to support appropriate grouping.
  • If you have questions about the program and how it might benefit your child, you may contact Ms. McNeely directly at rmcneely@parish.org.
