Reading Workshop-8th
Description
In this focused reading workshop, rising 8th graders will make significant progress on one of their required summer reading selections while refining the analytical skills expected at the highest level of middle school. Each day includes sustained independent reading time in a variety of settings, paired with structured discussions that emphasize accountability, depth of thought, and preparation for more advanced literary study.
Students will engage in close reading and analysis of key literary elements, including character development, conflict, theme, and the author’s craft. Building on annotation strategies introduced in earlier grades, campers will practice identifying meaningful passages, tracking ideas across a text, and supporting interpretations with clear textual evidence. Small-group discussions and guided activities will challenge students to articulate insights, consider multiple perspectives, and engage in thoughtful academic conversation.
This workshop prepares students for the increased rigor of 8th grade English by strengthening reading stamina, critical analysis, and discussion skills before the school year begins. Families will receive a workshop summary at the end of the week highlighting progress, strategies practiced, and areas for continued growth.
NOTE: The title and author of the required summer reading book will be shared via email in the spring.
