Step into the world of diplomacy! In this interactive class, students take on the role of United Nations delegates, working in teams to address global challenges and develop policy recommendations aligned with the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals. Through research, debate, and negotiation, students sharpen their critical thinking, communication, and problem-solving skills while gaining hands-on experience in international affairs. From crafting persuasive arguments to navigating diplomatic discussions, this class offers an exciting opportunity to explore global issues and build leadership skills in a real-world context.
Weekly Focus
Week 1:
• Introductions and overview of the United Nations
• When and why the UN was founded
• How many countries are members?
• Team presentations: “Explaining the UN to a Newcomer”
• Peer feedback and discussion
Week 2 and beyond:
• Impromptu speaking exercises to build confidence
• Introduction to the NHSMUN conference
• Research and share findings on the conference structure
• Begin exploring the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)
• Weekly focus on different SDGs through research, group discussions, and mock negotiations
