4-H Clubs - 4-H Sustainable Fashion
Description
The Tompkins County 4-H Sustainable Fashion Club will educate youth (ages 13-18) about sustainable fashion, how to care for their own clothing, and address the fashion industry's biggest challenges. While similar to home economics teachings, this timely club will delve into greater detail about the fashion industry’s environmental impacts and sustainable actions. The idea is to teach youth the skills and abilities necessary to properly care for, repair, and shop for their clothing. Being able to do basic mending and repairs, such as sewing on a button, and knowing how to keep clothing in use as long as possible, is a life skill lost with the newest fast fashion business model. Club projects may include upcycling garments, visiting the Cornell Fashion and Textile Collection, working with natural dyes, learning basic hand and machine sewing, and much more. Educating youth about sustainable fashion practices while engaging them in hands-on learning experiences can empower them to take action, creating a generation prepared to address broader environmental challenges, and doing so at Cornell University’s College of Human Ecology, which offers them a unique opportunity for a new form of education.

Youth must be enrolled in "2025-26 Tompkins County 4-H" in order to enroll in this club.
