Introduction to 21st Century Global Issues
Description
In an increasingly interconnected world, the ability to understand and navigate complex topics is becoming even more critical. This survey course is designed to expose undergraduate students to, and expand understanding of, a range of relevant global issues and competencies in order to better prepare them for a range of career options (business, public health, government or non-profit).
Issues related to population growth and the movement of people, international trade and finance, energy use, environmental impact, the spread of disease and hunger, cybersecurity and artificial intelligence all require coordination and cooperation that transcend national borders.
FORMAT: 25 hours of classroom instruction over the course of five days, plus approximately one hour of light reading/prep work per evening.
WHO CAN ENROLL? Current undergraduate students in any major. There are no prerequisites.
CREDITS: Cost includes one (1) college/university credit from Concordia College
About the Instructor: Anne Linnee
Following a 21-year career as a U.S. Foreign Service Officer, Anne retired from the State Department in 2023. During her career she primarily worked on issues in, and related to, Africa and Asia. Her overseas assignments included the United Arab Emirates, Afghanistan, China, Pakistan, Mauritania and South Africa, as well as Washington, DC. Her final assignment was as the U.S. Consul General in Durban, South Africa. She has a B.A. in Urban Studies from the University of Minnesota and a M.S. in National Security Strategy from the National War College in Washington, DC. She speaks Spanish, French and some Mandarin.
