Intermediate Throwing Workshop

In this workshop you will gain confidence in throwing a piece on the wheel in two or more sections and joining them together. Throwing in multiple sections allows for greater height and reduced weight in a variety of forms. We will sketch a form to use as a guide. We will split the sketch into two or more sections and throw each section. The sections will be treated with heat to firm them up just enough to join them together. After joining the pieces we will practice continuing to throw the tops and correcting our forms with ribs.


Instructor Bio:
Norah Ruth Amstutz is a recent graduate of the MFA program at Notre Dame. She started her career in clay as a studio assistant for Mark Goertzen in Goshen, IN and worked for him from 2015-2022. She now works from her home studio and garden in South Bend and serves as Treasurer for the Northern Indiana Clay Alliance. Her work ranges from atmospheric and functional to narrative and intensively decorated. She is inspired by the aesthetics and politics of the Art Nouveau and Arts and Crafts Movements.
