Acting - 5/30

Weekly Drama Camps for Summer 2023!
All camps will explore new material each week and are designed to be repeated.

Tuesday - Friday (4-Day Camp)
Times: 9am-3pm (with Free Extended Care: Before care starts at 7:30am; After care runs until 5:30pm)

Designed for a variety of experience levels, this class develops skill and confidence as students analyze, rehearse, and perform scenes from plays written for young audiences. Each class investigates character development and acting technique through exploration of the director/actor relationship. Intensive scene work emphasizes the process of working with other actors to develop relationships onstage and find deeper meaning in the written word. This camp will culminate in a performance, or “sharing” on Friday in our main auditorium.

All classes this summer are designed to be repeated. Like actors working on new scripts, students will explore a different story and will create new shows through exercises, games, and activities each week.

The Acting class works on:
• Understanding basic dramatic structure and a playwright’s intention
• Interpreting a scripted scene
• Memorizing lines
• Delivering dialogue with intention
• Using loud, clear voices
• Making motivated character decisions based on the dialogue of the scene
• Developing engaging characters and relationships
• Listening/Responding to other characters in a scene
• Connecting a director’s blocking to the action of a scene
• Understanding the director-actor relationship
• Learning stage directions and theatre vocabulary
• Working as an ensemble
• Exercising discipline as they work toward the goal of the show
• Having an absolute blast

NCT’s focus is always the healthy development of young people. We believe that the skills students learn in the drama classroom will serve them in their everyday lives as well as provide a foundation if they choose to pursue theatre studies and professional work.

NCT offers free extended care for our families. Before Care opens at 7:30 a.m. and After Care closes at 5:30 p.m. You can add this service during registration or on a day-to-day basis during the camp week. Extended care consists of supervised unstructured free time. Students are welcome to bring a book or electronic device (that NCT is not responsible for). During after care, we will also have a daily option of a G or PG-rated children’s movie playing as an activity choice.

*There may be two sections of this class. If participating with a friend/sibling (of the same age) and you would like them in the same class, please indicate this in the "friend request" question during registration. If you would prefer the sibling be in another section of the class (if possible), please indicate in that field.
