Summer Camps
Above and Beyond is an in-depth, two week experience that is designed to immerse high school students in the multi-faceted world of space science and research. Originally designed as a partnership between the Learning Center at PARI and the Duke TIP Field Studies program,
this camp explores the universe through astronomy,
physics, and astrobiology.

Learning and applying the fundamental concepts of astrophysics

• Independent and group research projects

• Hands-on instrument (radio and optical) training and understanding
their purpose as they relate to the fields of physics, astronomy,
and astrobiology

• Develop research methodology through planning
and implementation
• Analyze data consistently with prior research
• Formulate conclusions of the nature of celestial
objects using scientific data
• Curriculum parallels college level courses working
with the same instruments and resources available to
researchers who work with the Learning Center
• Special guest speakers
• Recreational activities, including visiting local waterfalls, swimming
holes and hiking in the Blue Ridge Mountains
• Lodging and all meals at the Learning Center campus
