Legos 1st-2nd Bricks for Kidz after-school program teaches kids science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) concepts. The kids build a different project each week out of LEGO® Bricks. Each project begins with a lesson led by a teacher. Then they dive in with their partners and use their creativity and problem-solving skills to build their models, whether it’s a machine, a building or some other structure.

Whatever the theme may be, each new project offers an opportunity to use their hands and minds to explore, solve problems and discover. They learn to cooperate and work with other children, all while picking up the fundamentals of things like architecture and engineering. Our classes follow the Bricks 4 Kidz moot: We Learn, We Build, We Play with … LEGO® Bricks.

Clay hand building 1st-5th grade
Clay Hand-building:

Hand building with clay is an intuitive process that promotes learning, creativity, problem-solving and original thought. It is also therapeutic. Students will learn the basic techniques of molding (pinching, coiling, slabbing, slip & score) while honing in their observation and imagination. While designing their clay piece and clarifying design problems by trial and error, children are able to experiment, to invent and to think visually. This class gives them a chance to be artistic and scientific. There are guided projects to teach the techniques and of course free time to experiment. Exploration is encouraged. Understanding a weak point in a clay structure, a child is able to feel their way into the mechanics of building: for instance by making a few handles for a cup and choosing the best one, the child learns to make choices and to learn experientially. If they feel bad about a joint coming apart, then to help them figure out a way to make it stronger allows them to apply the techniques they learn by experimentation. The teaching approach in this class is as consultant not director. The product is being designed by them for them. Guidance along the way makes this a fun class while embedding fine motor and life skills!
