Intro to Chess/Mastering Skills (Wednesdays) Fall S2
Description
What is the right time to introduce the game of Chess to children? That question can be answered by gauging the interest of the child and the length of their attention span. Early exposure to Chess teaches strategic thinking and focus. In this course, children will learn the "proper" names of pieces, the correct placement on the board at set-up and how each piece moves and captures. As players learn these basics and begin to compete with peers, good sportsmanship and Chess etiquette are emphasized. As each child's skills develop, Chess teaches all levels of critical thinking: knowledge, comprehension, analysis and evaluation. Students learn to maintain an inner dialogue of possible moves that varies depending on the moves their opponent makes. They learn patience in not touching pieces until opponents move is completed so as not to "telegraph" their intended move. Suzy Brooks uses fun original stories and even movements for those kinesthetic learners to teach the aspects of the game of Chess. Even though Chess can be a serious game, learning and laughter go hand in hand. This course is offered all year for those who want to keep building on their knowledge. In subsequent sessions, new students will learn the basics and returning players will begin where they left off.
