Description
Percy Shelley wrote that in nature, a person can find their voice in "all her music, from the moan of thunder to the song of night's sweet bird." In this class, we will find our writing voice in the natural world. We will read the writing of authors inspired by nature, including Emily Dickinson, Joy Harjo, Laura Ingalls Wilder, Emerson, and Wendell Berry, among others. Students will experiment with different genres of writing from poetry to journalism. At the same time, they will be encouraged to go into nature for their inspiration, whether it is a family trip to Mount Hood or just staring at a caterpillar in their front lawn. We will try to deepen our relationship with nature by writing about it, and we will ask, how can we find our voice in nature and how can we give nature in times such as these?
