Advanced Mandarin Chinese

Already know some Chinese? Great — let’s keep going! In this class, students will keep practicing pinyin, pronunciation, and tones to make speaking Chinese even more fun. We’ll learn to read and write some Chinese characters, find out how they’re built, and explore some simple grammar through games, songs, and hands-on activities. Get ready to grow your Chinese skills while having fun with friends! (8 sessions)

After School Chorus

If you love to sing and want more experience with part-singing, singing from music notation and octavos, solfege, sight-singing and developing a beautiful, in-tune singing voice, please join us for Extended Chorus. We will perform one concert a term, as well as have more informal chances to perform during our school day. You are welcome to sing with both lunch recess choruses and Extended Chorus. Art Fun 1st-5th Grade

Art Fun is for students who love art! It’s a fun time to develop creativity, stretch the imagination, and explore several art concepts and techniques. Students will paint, draw, sculpt and experiment with recycled materials. Inspiration will come from a wide range of traditional, contemporary, and cultural art ideas. Create what you want! All students are welcome to bring in their own outside projects to work on also! (7 sessions)

Basic Acrylic Painting on Canvas
Basic Acrylic Painting on Canvas: Kathryn Czarnecki, Rowland Hall Faculty / 3:30-4:30 Wednesdays grades 1-5 / FEE: $215
In this class students will explore the basics of acrylic painting on canvas., including composition, color mixing, and brush stroke techniques. Subject matter will include landscapes, animals, and still life studies. All artwork created will be ready to hang on the wall! (8 sessions)

Chess Club
Chess Club: Marti Olsen-Mills / 3:30-4:30/ Tuesdays grades 1-5/ FEE: $185
Welcome to Chess! This chess class is designed to teach a wide range of ability levels from beginners all the way to advanced students. Students will learn: game rules, the most fundamental ideas of attack and defense, and to play/complete an entire game of chess. The goal is to foster a love and enthusiasm for the game, to motivate students to play, study and improve their chess, and to give them the confidence to play in chess tournaments. Students will be expected to review material and to practice outside of class. They will be encouraged but not required to play in local scholastic chess tournaments. Students will receive opening, middle game, and endgame knowledge. They will learn tactics, combinations and strategies, and will analyze famous games of the past, as well as games played by the students in chess tournaments. If enough students register, we will consider splitting this class into a beginner and advanced class. (8 sessions)

Comedy Sports Club

Discover the power of play in our Theater Games class! This dynamic, interactive course is all about using theater games to unlock creativity, build confidence, and strengthen performance skills. Through engaging theater games, students will explore improvisation, character work, and ensemble building in a supportive environment. Perfect for all levels of experience. Cooking
Come cook your way across the United States in this fun, hands-on class! Over 8 weeks, you'll get to try tasty dishes from different parts of the country, learning classic recipes and unique techniques from distinct regions. Each week, you'll learn new cooking skills and work with a small group of friends to make yummy, easy-to-follow recipes. Join us for some fun in the kitchen while exploring the flavors of America! Chef Kettell is currently the lead chef at Sage on the McCarthy Campus. She recently made the move to Salt Lake City all the way from Nashville. With a passion for both cooking and creativity, she spends her free time designing custom hoodies for her business, hitting the golf course, playing with her dog and of course cooking! (8 sessions). Gardening Club
Gardening Club is back for the Spring! Join the Gardening Club to design and plant a themed garden for the "Science Garden!" Starting back up this Spring, students will research pollinator gardens, native species, and herbs and other early-sprouting edibles. Students will prep the garden boxes, learn how to start the growing process inside as temperatures warm up, and ultimately nurture our garden space for all to enjoy. The Gardening Club is open to anyone no matter how green their thumb is. The gardening club will start one week earlier than other classes on March 17th! Gardening Club begins: Tuesday, March 17th

There is no additional charge for attending the Gardening Club but students in attendance will be charged the hourly extended day rate before club time, during club time, and any time they spend with us between 4:30 and 6:00 pm. Impact City FC

Impact City FC after school soccer program is designed to instill character, confidence and an active lifestyle in kids grades 1-5. Every participant receives high quality soccer instruction from former MLS Cup Champion Chandler Hoffman, a FREE t-shirt AND a chance to earn PRIZES! Each week teaches a new skill, and will be filled with fun activities, character lessons and mini soccer games. (8 sessions)

Karate
Karate: Sensei Amadou Niang / 4:00-5:00 / Mondays AND Wednesdays; must participate in both weekly classes, grades 1-5 / FEE: $260
This karate program gives students access to Shotokan Karate, one of the most popular traditional Japane se martial arts worldwide. Classes are taught by Sensei Amadou Niang, a Utah licensed educator who is a 6th degree black belt and a certified Pan-American karate referee. His teaching of Shotokan is based on the curriculum of the International Martial Arts Association (IMA) and the philosophies of the founder of Shotokan karate-do, Gichin Funakoshi. Students learn in a safe and fun environment where the principles of "zanchin" (i.e. awareness), discipline, respect, self-defense, and self-esteem are emphasized. They will have opportunities to develop skills that will serve them for life and prepare those who are most dedicated to participate in local, regional, national, and even international karate tournaments in the long run. Many of the students who have trained under Sensei Niang have won medals in these tournaments. Student progress will be assessed and rewarded through the IMA stripes and belt system. Different color stripes will be automatically awarded based on skill mastery and citizenship. Testing, however, for each new belt is voluntary and testing fees are not included in the tuition. *Please note, uniforms may be purchased for $40. Students may use a uniform from a different karate program as long as it is plain white. (15 sessions).

Learn to Play the Cello
Learn to Play the Cello: Sarah Yoon, Rowland Hall Faculty / 3:45 - 4:45 / Tuesdays grades 1-5, at the Lincoln Street Campus / FEE $175
This is a fun cello class for beginners. Students will learn to play the cello through games and songs like Baby Shark! They will also learn to hold the instrument, read music, and understand basic rhythm. No experience is required. Just be ready to have fun and enjoy playing music! Lower School Band
Lower School Band: Taylor Ouzts, Rowland Hall faculty
Thursdays, 3:30-4:30 pm, grades 4–5; this class will be held at the Lincoln Street Campus

The Lower School band is for students interested in making music on wind and percussion instruments. Although no experience is required, students are encouraged to pursue private study on their instruments in tandem with this experience; one or two private lessons before our first rehearsal would be very helpful. Band students will learn fundamental technique and ensemble skills while learning to perform a variety of styles of band music. Participation in the Lower School band will prepare students to participate in Rowland Hall's burgeoning middle and upper school jazz band programs. Bring your pizzicato fingers, clapping hands, stomping feet, and oh yeah, your violins, violas, and cellos! We will explore the fundamentals of playing together, listening to others, good rhythm, and basic musicianship. Repertoire will be folk tunes, Bach, or Beethoven arrangements. Mandarin Chinese

Join Ms. Xu to learn some Chinese language and culture. The class will cover some basic topics like greetings, numbers, families, animals, colors, fruits and vegetables, Chinese food and American food, school supplies, countries and nationalities, etc. All of the topics are designed for elementary school students and will be presented through different activities such as text animation, songs, stories, etc. You also can learn some Chinese culture through Chinese traditional festivals, TV shows, and cartoon films. Pokemon Club

The Rowland Hall Pokémon Club is here for the Winter as part of Extended Day! During meetings, we discuss and play all things Pokémon—the Trading Card Game, video games, anime, and more! Students are encouraged to bring their own cards and game consoles (with parental permission) to play and trade. Don’t have any cards or games? No problem! We have plenty of cards and gaming systems for students to share. In addition, we’ll have numerous giveaways and freebies available for anyone who wants to participate. So whether students are experienced Pokémon masters or just starting their Pokémon journey, they’re sure to enjoy their time in the Pokémon Club.
Rowland Hall’s Pokemon Club is designed to allow students the opportunity to bond over something that unites them, Pokémon! Through playing competitive games, making well-thought-out trades, or just having casual conversations while watching Anime, the Rowland Hall Pokémon Club teaches invaluable lessons, including sportsmanship, inclusivity, friendship, and more. Faculty advisors Robert Lainhart and Ashley Meddaugh bring their extensive Pokémon knowledge to the club and look forward to sharing their love for Pokémon with students.
