Each day, campers will learn new techniques to fold, cut, and decorate paper, creating everything from origami animals and 3D sculptures to handmade cards and festive decorations. By the end of the week, campers will have a collection of colorful, unique paper creations to take home, along with the confidence to keep crafting on their own.

In order to be prepared for upper level studies, every student needs to have a strong vocabulary. Greek and Latin words provide the foundation for most of the words students encounter in everyday reading, as well as the “languages” learned in science and social studies. In this class, participants will learn to analyze new words, as well as determine their meanings, based upon a thorough examination of various Greek and Latin words. Students will prepare learning aids, share strategies they’ve developed, and compete in “buzzer” games daily that reinforce the knowledge they’ve incorporated into language arts. Expect standard test scores to soar, with timely review of the “verbal attack skills” we’ll learn during our studies!

Each day blends movement with simple skill lessons so students not only get faster but understand why their bodies move the way they do. Explore a series of cross-curricular, theme-based activities that develop S.T.E.A.M. skills (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math) as well as language and communication concepts. This workshop features robots powered by both batteries and human energy that are built with specific LEGO bricks and elements focusing on various moving parts. Throughout the week, participants will construct builds like boxcar racers, windmills, fishing rods & fish, construction cranes, scales, dogs, insects, clocks, dual shifting racers and more. 566 Create a “Rube Goldberg” (10-12) 12:30-3PM
A “Rube Goldberg” is a machine that is deliberately over-engineered to perform a simple task in a complex fashion. It is based upon premier cartoonist, Rube Goldberg’s work, and is anything but simple ... and a strategist’s “dream-come true.” Students will review the six simple machines, study designs, identify complex methods used to solve simplistic problems, create designs of their own and attempt to create “Rube Goldberg” devices in the classroom. Physics concepts, such as inertia, transference of energy, momentum, etc., will be examined, as teams work together to create complex problems ... that were never meant to BE complex! Expect to experience problem-solving at its FINEST in this class! (Also expect to have a LOT of fun!!) Please Note: This class is, by design, a teacher-facilitated/student-guided classroom experience. Family and friends will be invited to an end-of-class presentation on Thursday.

578 LEGO Creative Challenges (5-10) 12:30-3PM
Join us in the fun of building with LEGO bricks and elements to create your own designs, or work with others using LEGO base plates, 1x2, 1x3, and 1x4 bricks as you discover the beauty of interlocking for strong builds. Each day, a building challenge will be presented: interlocking to make towers, then using windows & doors, adding LEGO elements such as fences, animals, and vegetation, and building with other unique pieces. We will also create pyramids and mosaics, and build vehicles and facades. Verbal and communication skills are enhanced as students describe their creations to others. Not only will creativity be demonstrated, but students will also work with counting and estimation. Throughout the week, builders also cooperate with one another in the challenging task of disassembling, sorting, and returning LEGO elements to the correct bins. It is an amazing week of fun and exciting builds!
