Backpacking the Weminuche Wilderness
Description
Led by: Scott Crago & Amy Dalness
Bosque School

At the end of the summer, Bosque School will offer a new backpacking trip to the Weminuche Wilderness, nestled in the San Juan Mountains outside of Durango, CO. Students and staffulty will travel to Durango where they will ride the Durango and Silverton Narrow Gauge Train to the Needleton Trailhead (8,212 feet), 13 miles south of Silverton, CO. From there, the group will hike six miles to Chicago Basin (11,200 feet) and establish a base camp. The group will have the opportunity to explore Chicago Basin, fish Needle Creek and Twin Lakes, and potentially summit Windom Peak (14,088 feet). Chicago Basin provides some of the most spectacular and rarely seen mountain vistas, high alpine lakes, and wildlife in one of Colorado’s most popular mountain ranges.

This trip will help students build leadership, teamwork, expedition, and backcountry skills. While summiting Windom Peak would be an achievement, it certainly does not define the trip. The focus of the trip is to teach students about preparation, route finding, expedition mentality, and responsible stewardship of natural resources and terrain. This is a significant trip that will allow students to build a foundation from which to develop the confidence and experience needed to explore the amazing Southwest backcountry.

The trip will be led by staffulty members Dr. Scott Crago and Amy Dalness. Both have years of experience designing and leading similar trips. Furthermore, Dr. Crago has been exploring the Weminuche Wilderness since he was 10 years old, and the area is dear to his heart.

This program is open to Bosque School students only.
