Online Chess Masters with Kyle Jones (Half Trimester)
Description
Students in grades K–5 of all playing levels are invited to join the Wellington School Winter Chess Club for an engaging season of learning, playing, and improving at the game of chess.
Candidate Master Kyle Jones will provide students with live, interactive instruction through Zoom, followed by online tournament play on Lichess.org. The program welcomes students brand new to chess as well as those with competitive experience.
Each 50-minute class will be divided into two parts. During the first half, students will join Kyle on Zoom for an interactive chess lesson using a virtual chessboard. Lessons will introduce age-appropriate chess concepts such as openings, tactics, strategy, middle-game ideas, endgame patterns, chess history, and tournament skills. Students can participate by asking questions, solving puzzles, taking notes, or following along with a physical chessboard at home.
During the second half of each class, students will put their skills into practice through an arena-style online tournament on Lichess.org. This format gives students the opportunity to play multiple games during the session while reducing the waiting time often associated with traditional tournament formats. Students' games are automatically saved, providing opportunities to review their play and continue learning beyond the class.
Whether a student is learning how the pieces move or already competing in tournaments, the program will provide instruction and activities that can be adapted to a variety of ages and playing levels.
