SWOC Mentor Application
Description
As a Special Week of Camp (SWOC) Mentor, you will play an important role in supporting campers with special needs or their siblings during the day, helping them engage in activities, build relationships, and create lasting memories. Your primary responsibility will be to spend time with your assigned camper, providing guidance, companionship, and assistance throughout the day.
Campers come with at least one family member, and while the parents have their own program, you will be with your camper for the majority of the day, ensuring they are safe, engaged, and enjoying their experience.
Key Responsibilities:
- Meals: Your day will begin at 8:00 AM with breakfast, where you will join your camper, other campers, families, and mentors. Lunch is at 12:30 PM, and dinner's at 6:00 PM. You will eat with your camper and the group.
- Group Activities & Activity Periods: Each day will include structured group activities and activity periods. You will guide your camper through these activities, ensuring they participate and have fun.
- Rest Period: After lunch, campers and siblings not participating in the Young at Heart program will have a rest period. During this time, campers will be with their families, and you will have a break.
Note: Young at Heart (YAH) is a cohort of the SWOC participants who are 18 years or older. You may be a mentor to a YAH participant.
- Talent Show: Your camper will be invited to participate in a talent show. You will assist them in developing their talent or performance and help them prepare for the show.
- Evening Activities: After dinner, there will be an activity or devotional for the group. You will support your camper and assist in facilitating a positive, inclusive environment.
- Free Time & Fellowship: While not actively with your camper, you will have the opportunity to enjoy fellowship with fellow volunteers.
Additional Volunteer Perks and Accommodations:
- When not with your camper you are welcome to enjoy the property and fellowship with other volunteers.
- Volunteers will stay in shared accommodations with other volunteers of the same gender, featuring twin camp beds and a shared bathroom.
-The cabins are not air conditioned but most cabins have ceiling fans. Additional fans are available in the Great Hall supply closet if needed.
Qualifications:
- Two recommendations, one being from a current ministry leader.
- Clearances and approval from Hope for Kids.
- Compassion & Patience: Experience working with individuals with special needs or a genuine interest in providing care and support.
- Reliability: Willingness to commit to the full duration of the camp, actively engage with your camper, and follow through with scheduled activities.
- Teamwork: Ability to work with other volunteers and staff to create a positive and inclusive camp experience for everyone.
