Summer Institute - Environmental Literature
Description
Mr. Mullen
Eligible students are entering grade 11–12.
Where are we? How did we get here? How do we connect or reconnect to this space? Where do we go from here? How might our journey be filled with joy, hope, and possibility? Using field study, USM’s outdoor education classroom, Scientific Ecological Knowledge, Traditional Ecological Knowledge, various forms of writing, oral presentations, and our homegrown Round-Table pedagogy, this course will explore the questions above in an attempt to develop learners who thrive on challenges, leaders who champion ethics and integrity and communicate effectively, and citizens who empathize with and respect others by engaging in local communities (italicized words from Portrait of a USM Graduate). Ultimately, the class is designed to help our students become better stewards of their “home,” which includes not only the land they inhabit, but the resources, wildlife, and culture woven into that land.
