Summer Institute - Economics
Description
Eligible students are entering grade 11–12. Students in grade 10 may take with special permission.

This course offers students a hands-on exploration of the fundamental principles and concepts of economics. Class activities allow students to model such core concepts as supply and demand, diminishing marginal returns, economic growth and productivity, and the global economy. The course content includes measuring the economy, prices, employment, and the money supply. We also delve into economic institutions such as the Federal Reserve, the banking system, as well as analyze fiscal and monetary policies. Historical and contemporary examples are used to give students an understanding of what economists have, and have not, learned about the use of monetary and fiscal policies to combat economic fluctuations. We will also examine economic problems such as inequality and the balance between price stability and employment. The course concludes with an examination of the international economy and the implications of globalization for the United States. In this unit, students explore the global economy through role playing in a final G-20 simulation.

This class fulfills one semester of the elective requirements for the Transcript Designation in Global Scholarship.
